Within panoramic Kumaon lies the district of Nainital. Its snow-capped peaks, verdant valleys, rolling meadows and crystal lakes have beckoned lovers of nature since ages. Dotted with lakes, Nainital has earned the epithet of 'Lake District' of India. The most prominent of the lakes is Naini Lake ringed by hills and named after the Goddess Naini.Nainital is a lovely hill-station surrounded by mountains on three sides. Once this area had many lakes and it was called the 'city of 60 lakes' or 'Chakta', though most of these lakes have disappeared now. Today, the life of Nainital revolves around the lake of Naini. But there are few other lakes around Nainital which are equally beautiful and attractive as the Naini lake.
In order to stop the erosion of soil and to balance environmental ecology, the Board has been planting variety of trees. Cantonment Board has paid adequate attention for protection of wildlife too.
 PARKS :
Nainital Cantonment Board mantains three small children parks. The public parks maintained by the Board have been aesthetically designed with swings, benches and gardens.They are special attractions amongst children. These parks are open to all. Two of the park are situited near Kailakhan and one at Pyare Lodge building
PLANTATION :
The Cantonment Board has carried out plantation on large patches of vacant land and road sides. 5,002 Saplings has been planted in the year 2007-2008 of different species such as Deodar, Pangar, Branss, Angu. The saplings/plants have been protected by means of tree guards having metal plates with thought provoking slogans pertaining to environmental awareness. The survival rate is approximately 83%.
 CANTT FOREST :
The Cantt board manages a reserve forest of about 381.50 acres. Massive plantation drives are undertaken every year. Hunting is strictly prohibited. Illegal cutting of trees is strictly prohibited.
During summers all the citizens are requested not to do anything that can trigger forest fires which results in a lot of ecological damage.The Board has widely taken care of the environment by adopting necessary measures for conservation, ecological and afforestation at large in Cantonment area.
